Spring is just around the corner! As a very young child I used to ponder that statement as it was a pretty abstract concept. Yes I went to the corner and looked for it...hmmm. Language can be so confusing. Well spring here in New Mexico is pretty fickle. One day its close to 70 and the next theres 3" of snow on the ground. As I walk my dog Lillie I am noticing bud swell on a lot of the bushes. Soon the forsythia will be in bloom and the tips of daffodils and other spring bulbs are just starting to peek out as well.
Its also flowering season for cacao in Hawaii with the future promise of fat pods in late summer if we're lucky. Cacao is not pollinated by bee's, its a small midge, one of those no see um irritating insects. We cultivate midge habitat by leaving fallen leaves and practicing an organic method of farming that promotes healthy microbial activity in the soil. In March we happy a higher nitrogen organic supplement to ensure new leaves along with the tiny flowers.
